Cricket and IT - They go hand in hand

After our Indian cricket team recent failures in overseas, too many things have been said and written and why not, it is because of people like us ("Fans") that the Indian Cricket players make their living, if we didn’t exist then they wouldn’t. So it makes a lot of sense when the angered Fans call for the heads of some players, have opinion on everything that surrounds Indian cricket.

Of the many theories floating around about our players, these - They don’t practice enough, they have fun during tours, Don’t last all the 5 days, Transition is not happening -, are what being heard loud and frequent enough.

Since I belong to the IT industry, I can co-relate all these things and I find it ridiculous on the part of the "Fans" to accuse our players this way, why? Let me explain

1. They don’t practice enough

Most of us who are in IT do our work, let take the case of a programmer, between the office hours (typically 9 -6, or whatever time suits the individual) and then during non-office hours most of us (almost 100%) either only check emails or watch TV or spend time with the family and not practice programming even when at home/outside office similarly, our cricketers play during the match and when not playing match they have their right to spend time the way want, how can we expect them to keep doing the same thing even during non-playing time

So lets stop bull shitting and don’t expect out players what we cant do

2. They have fun during tours

Lets take the case of a programmer who travels to onsite on business visa (obviously for work), but tell me how many come back without seeing the places around the city that he happens to visit, actually to be frank they plan well in advance and sound to all their friends onsite that they are coming and to make sure that they can have as much fun as they can, does it mean that they didn’t go their for work and just fun, no it is having fund while work is our mantra and so is the mantra of our cricket team, so why blame them when they are doing exactly as we are??

Lets stop being stupid and correct ourselves first

3. They don’t last all the 5 days

I equate the 5 days test match to a project, what is the dream of every manager in IT, to finish project well ahead of time so that it saves both time, money and human resources.. Well our players are also doing the same they are finishing the 5 days match in 2, 2.5 or max 3 days, instead of appreciating/rewarding them we tend to make them look like villains. Imagine what all our players can do in those extra saved days - they can attend dinners to raise fund, sign autographs, endorse more products, visit schools, do charity - all these helps in improving revenue and at the same time improve India's image

So lets give credit to our players instead of admonishing them

4. Transitioning is not happening

Tell me all you IT folks, which project you have handled/worked on has had a smooth transition or a successful transition - well 95% answer would be none. The people from whom knowledge has to be taken will always delay or give ridiculous deadline, we need to understand that by taking their work away we are in turn being responsible for loosing their job. Obviously we start complaining, not understanding how difficult and painful is it for those giving up their work and most of the time when you check the status of a project in transition it is always "In Progress". Well the same is happening with our players, lets give the seniors their due credit and give them time to decide on the transition, because only with their full co-operation would this be successful.

So please stop being naïve and don’t always complain about transition - it will happen when the time is ripe

Now the only problem is when the board of directors (selectors) would have a knee-jerk reaction and take some Hotchpotch decision which would have a permanent effect on the company (Indian cricket team). My only suggestion or request to them is not to kill the golden goose and instead do the following

• Start accepting more projects in countries like Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, West Indies, Canada, Ireland - give them the MFN (most preferred nation) tag

• Always accept projects from Australia, South Africa, England, Sri Lanka for in bound and not on-site, this way we can control the end result

• Keep allotting more shares, more salary to the VP's of the company (seniors in the team), this ways once their revenue are intact they will start involving in better decision making exercises

And for all those people from Non-IT, you have every right to point fingers at the Indian cricket team, ask for the heads of the seniors, request for wholesale change in the team, burn effigies, throw stones at the players house..

Because as they say "The play should go on, even if the actors are dead"

Points, Redemption and the Art of maintaining kids

Its a straight lift from the best selling novel title..but yet when I told this after it worked with my son, Amitha (for those who don't know, my lovely wife) told me that it suits well for what I am doing with my son.

Well the story begins this way, Pradhyumna (my son) is slightly asthamtic and we wanted him to start learing swimming, so once we moved to Bengaluru and settled at L&T SouthCity, we put him in the swimming camp that was starting.

Everyday he gets up early and gets ready without being egged on much and is all ready to leave home for his class by 8:15 am, Amitha took him for the first 2 days and on a saturday and since had nothing much to do at home, she asked me to take him...all I wanted to watch was how does he react to the coach instructions, does he talk back, ask questions etc... I was happy that out of the 8 kids he was the only one checking with the coach and ask him if he was doing it correct, I wondered how come he is doing this, he never talks to anyone when we go out or someone visits home. Then..came the best part, the coach after going around the pool, picked those kids doing the things that was taught, in the right way and saying to them "bravo, you are doing it correctly..you get 10 points" that made my son happy and I realized that rewards/appreciation works across all ages and for all occasion.

Fast forward couple of hours later...son was troubling his sister to the core and she was screaming at the top of her voice and literally brining down the house.. I was trying to concentrate on reading a book and got literally wild and gave him one slap on his back...he went to his room and didnt come back for nearly half an hour...I really got pissed with myself for having lifted my hand and realized that if some stranger can give me points (which has no value) and my son feels happy... why not me?

So I started this...(lets fast forward again to dinner time), while having dinner again he was pulling his sisters hair, I told him if he doesnt trouble bebo (daughters nick name) for the next 30 mins he will get 50 points, it didnt seem to make any difference to his behaviour...he continued troubling bebo, I was totally taken aback and felt bad that my points arent worth than the coach even though I was liberal enough to give him 40 points more..it made me think hard and then I told him for every good thing he does, he gets points and once it reaches 1000 points he gets a McDonalds toy (before all those people reading this start hammering me that I am encouraging junk foods, he doesnt like the burger but only the toy, so the junk part is for me/wife) and bingo, the entire night went of peacefully and actually he instead started playing with his sister and make her laugh..

Next day I introduced one more condition, everytime we find him bad things (troubling his sister, not listening to his mom etc) will make him loose points.. well it didnt go well with him...he started cribbing saying I give few points and now I am taking away..I realized this is no different from the performance appraisals that happen to us and we exactly behave how my son is doing... good happens we are happy, bad happens we crib.

This excercise of giving points, redemption for toys has worked but not fully...maybe once he sees his first toy from the earned points he will start throwing less and less tantrums

By the time he grows up, I wish he becomes immune to the peformance evaluation and does what is right...well that was not my intention when I started this whole excercise with him...but what the heck if it serves this purpose also I am happy.

He has collected 950 points till now (in last 5 days, he got a bonus of 500 points when he helped his sister to put on her shoes and also remove it)....the last 50 points wil be his best 50 points he will ever earn, I am sure of that.

Finally before I forget, Amitha is his book keeper, I mean maintains his points

New rules for Indian Cricket team by ICC for 2011 WC

ICC mulling over the possibility of allowing 13 players to play for India as lot of adv revenue is at stake in case India is eliminated before SF.

Other possibilities (at this time rumor) is that

- If a opposition bowler takes 2 wickets, he would be asked to change his bowling arm

- If a batsman scores 30, he would be asked to retire and come back again after 2 dismissals, if there are less than 2 dismissals after he retires, then he looses his chance to bat again
- If an India bowler is bowling well, he can bowl extra 4 overs to compensate for lack in bowling department.

ICC is in talk with all the other teams to take it further...
Speculation is that BCCI has a major hand in twisting ICC to take this further.. BCCI nor ICC spokesperson declined to comment.

"Dhoni already told.. they don't want all these favor from BCCI.. they are going to give their 120 % effort... extra 20% as VAT :P"

1. Fielding power play: A ball hit in these overs cannot exceed speed of 50kmph so that our fielders can do a heroic chase and save.
2. Switch substitution: Teams could substitute max of 5 players during a single match

3. Live auctions: Working together with ministry of external affairs, any team could buy any player on auction with immediate nationality."

"I think the rule should be: no Indian batsman can be declared out until he agrees to go and an opposition batsman should have to go if an Indian bowler feels so. An umpire should be fined his match fee and his assets frozen if he ruled an Indian out. Also, replays should be banned for the public. Only Indian players should watch it, and for their entertainment only!"

A Phenom called Rajini

As apples need to be eater fresh, I want to jot what is fresh in my memory about what I experienced in the movie hall watching "Endhiran - The Robo".

Not sure if I have ever seen so many TV channel media vans in front of a theater for a movie that is being released interviewing the audience and trying to understand what makes them throng the theater, almost everyone I spoke to wanted to be the first among their friends circle to watch Superstar, none other than the PHENOM they call RAJINIKANTH.

I am a true blood Kannadiga, but just cant resist myself to watch a Rajini movie, doesn’t matter which language it is in, he is a person beyond regional, religion barrier.

The moment his title "SUPERSTAR" appeared on the large screen the entire theater gave a rocking ovation by whistling, shouting.. all they were (including me) doing was purely connecting to the man they like so much.

I have give double thumbs up to Shankar for ensuring that there is no stone left unturned in making this movie, the special effects are actually better than most Hollywood movies, we have arrived is the message to Hollywood.

Aishwarya is amazing, song picturing is truly eye catching, and whoever is the costume designer- should be really proud of the work done.

There are so many scenes in the movie wherein you tend to forget that superstar is 50+, he gives every other hero in this country a run for their money, I think its not just about being chocolate hero, or vulgar gyrations or six pack, it’s all about connecting to the audience and he is a master in it and this movie proves once again.

Rajini performance in the negative role is the standout in the entire movie, his walk, his expressions are something that cannot be explained by words.. it has to be seen.. a picture is equal to a thousand words and he proves it.

I know this can be dismissed as some blabbering of a staunch fan but therein lays the fact of his immense personality; he makes everything he does on the screen believable, only he has that capability.

For the record there is no punch dialogue or actions that are usually his trademark in every movie of his, this is a wholesome entertainer and I am sure even kids would enjoy this movie, my next appointment with the Phenom will be with my family.

Women reservation - for??

There is so much hip hip hurray happening for the passing of the Women reservation bill, happy to see so much camaraderie amongst MPs from different political parties, different ideologies and opinions coming together for a particular cause, but does it really mean Women empowerment???

This is my take on this...

Women, as a matter of fact anyone, who want to get into political life will get into it irrespective of if there is reservation for them or not, take for example a sushma swaraj/brinda karat/jayalalitha/mayawati/vasrundhara raje scindia or anyone they will win irrespective of whether the seat is reserved or not, they have the capability.

Does this reservation ensure that Women who struggle day in and out to make ends meet benefited from this, or those who go miles to bring one pot of water to ensure the family doesn't go dry/ or go deep into the forest to ensure that the family doest go hungry??, Will it benefit all the single mother who are struggling to take care of their kids?, will it help Women get job easily?, will it ensure that Women get better education? will it ensure Women get better health care?...not sure it will help and my answer is NO.

Many are saying this bill will ensure that more Women representation means they will fight for more Women cause, this is like expecting just because our honorable PM is a Sikh he has done too many great things for the Sikh community, I know the analogy is bad... but the argument that more Women in parliament means more power to Women is also wrong.

For me what would have made more sense is a education bill which has reservation for Women, a employment bill which guarantees job for Women and a better health care for Women and ensure that it reaches the remotest part of India .. this is what empowerment of Women to me.

A reservation in parliament is nothing but a hogwash, all the existing women in parliament will still win irrespective of this bill, does it throw new women politicians into the fray, yes it does... WHO? the guy who loses his criteria to get nominated in that seat which is declared reserved for Women, will definitely ensure that his wife/sister/mother/relative will be field and he will play the puppeteer role and ensure that he is one who still calls the shot.

Would there be a law passed that any existing MP from the seat declared as reserved for Women cannot field his wife/mother/sister/relative?? the answer is NO

What will happen with this Women reservation bill is that, we would end up created more Rabri's.... and that is the truth.

Master Class

Everyone has a favourite crickter of his own, whom they follow religiously, thier ups and downs, records and all the things associated with that cricketer, but above all by default exists one person who is like a birthmark, that stays with you forever and comes after the favourite you have and that person is everyones and belongs to everyone, he is like ABCD that a child learns and never forgets and would go on to specialize in a particular field but ABCD remains with them...

There has been time where I have vested my anger for the way he plays and doesnt finish the game, but the reason why most like does it is because only he has that capability in him to fulfill each and every wish of the cricket loving people.

I missed watching the epic making 200 but ensured that I catch the highlights, see all the programme on each and every news channel discussing how he is great, selfless, little boy etc etc, but what remains at the core is a person who wants to bring ultimate glory to this cricket loving nation and in him is the fire to ensure that India lifts the world cup, he has been seen the cup being elusive for 5 times and this time I am sure he will ensure his hands is laid on it.

Lot can be said and written about him but nothing matches what he has achieved, he is a living legend and a person unparalleled in the history of this game.

He is never sated and thier lies the mystery why he is still successful and will be for a long long time.

This is my small tribute for him from me, Tondulkar is the right name for him.

AVATAR - A journey into reality

Having waited for more than a week to watch AVATAR, finally the d-day arrived on Dec 27, 10:30PM at IMAX 3D, Hyderabad.

Accompanied with family we took a journey into reality, a world created by James Cameron.

If you want to watch AVATAR, please do watch it on IMAX 3D screen, one has to experience the 3D aspect to believe it and enjoy the journey, I was amazed with the attention to detail that has been given in the movie, the insects, the six legged animails, the envornment, the NA'VI people, thier mannerisms, flying dragons..... the list goes on, the movie it the culmination of technology with story telling.

It is not just about the 3D aspect that the movie is worth watching for, it is about the values that we as humans tend to forget and accept by default that whatever we see is ours and that we should own it.

My son in between the movie asked me "'Appa idhu nijana' :=: 'Dad it this real'" and it was hard to convince him it isnt, he already has made plans for his next visit to Pandora :)

I promise that when you leave your chair and exit the movie hall, you would have fallen in love with Pandora and all that is part of Pandora.

The bonding between the Na'vi and the horse, how a dragon chooses its master and once it chooses it will never allow anyone else to ride it till it dies, the flying jellyfish like insects, the 'touch me not' plant, that closes itself the moment anyone touches it in a swirling fashion, the trees, the sleeping cocoon of the Na'vi, trust me you wont forget a single moment in the movie because you become part of it from the beginining.

Its a movie every one who is a film buff should watch, its the holygrail of the cinemas, I have never been amazed so much by a movie as I have with this movie, no doubt James Cameron took so many years after Titanic to make a movie that not only breaks barrier with the conventional thinking but sets a benchmark to everyone else to follow.

As we left the theatre, son told me " 'Appa naavu Pandora ge hogona' :=: 'Dad, we shall also go to Pandora'" and that is the feeling I am right now, when can I visit Pandora...

Take a WALK

Take a walk... literally I took a walk today.

After leaving the car at the mechanic, I thought to kill the time (since it would take nearly 3 hours for the car to be ready) by going for a movie, then something struck me, I really dont know what, but I decided to walk from Minister road (this is hyderabad) till The central (Punjagutta), it was long long time since I had walked so much, (I used to do regularly when during my engineering days when there was just one bus during morning and if you miss, one had to walk for nearly 5 kms). All through the duration of walking I felt I was part of the city unlike when u are inside a car. I stopped almost at each and every nook and corner and found so many small shops that sell things which you need and wouldnt find otherwise. At punjagutta there are so many jewellery shop, I have seen earlier but this time counted, there are nearly 20 shops. During the walk I notice so many billboards, more than 60% were for Ads, the remaining was from political parties with Congress ruling the roost and found less sign boards to help the motorists.

I cant say that the walk was very comfortable or totally enjoyable, but it was something different and I liked it, it made me go back many years, feel much younger and felt that I could connect easily with the people (sounding philosophical... maybe).

I think it is a good idea for anyone to just leave the machines that carry us and take a walk, and feel the difference... it did to me and I believe it will for you also.

The walk was around 6 - 7 Km.

De-Traumatising the education system

We have done it again, tweaking the education system for the good.. I am not sure why there was not this much of tweaking or debate during my school days, I clearly remember that actually there was more complain that the syllabus was less tough and we are studying less.. so on and so forth....
I wish we had a Kapil Sibal during our time, who knows I could have had got into IIM without much tension and concentrating what is required at higher level rather than struggling at the 10th level.

I know there will be lot of debate whether this is actually good for our future or not, and I will be keenly reading all those, but personally for me this is a really good move to centralize the education system and ensure that a kid doesn't unnecessarily bother that there are students from other state who are having undue advantage because of the syllabus.

There are few issues like, in Karnataka most (95%) schools don't have 11th or 12th and this kind of rule is of no consequence for them, since they anyway have to take the 10th exam since the college wont accept them without exams... so in general it is benefiting only around 5% of the students.... I wish Mr Sibal fixes this also.

Thanks Mr Kapil Sibal, I hope your intentions is noble and you implement Yash Pal report in its entirety.

Some changes do matter.

Elections Over:Clear mandate by people

Finally curtains have been drawn to the biggest election of all time. We can all proudly say that this has been a fairly conducted election and kudos to the Election commission for making this happen without any glitches.

My only worry before the results were due was that what if Congress and BJP both end up having almost same numbers say 150 - 155 and then it would have been difficult for anyone to have had a successful govt for the next 5 year since each would feel they have a chance, but good thing has been that the difference in seats between 1st and the 2nd largest party is 90 seats and the pre-poll alliance of UPA has been given clear mandate by the people to form the govt, this is really a very good development, if the same had happened with NDA also I would have been happy; finally all we need to see is a stable govt to run for 5 years without anyone pulling them to the left or right of them.

This election has put forward so many tough questions to the political parties, all most all candidates with criminal background have bitten the dust (even though they were staging proxy candidates), those who wanted to do good things in the fag end of the 5 year term have been sent home to cool their heels, those who involved in mud slinging at others have also been shown the door; all the parties should have a proper agenda and fight for them rather than trying to pull some other party/person only then shall we see India on the rapid growth path.

I always believe if there needs steady and proper growth, then a strong opposition party is very much needed, I wish that people continue to give a similar mandate they have given this elections ensuring that no single party will get absolute majority and thus needing support from regional and other small parties, so there is a check within the govt and not only the opposition party; Till BJP became a super power, there was no one to question Congress, hence there wasnt much progress for nearly 40 years of our independence, only after BJP making inroads and established itself as a major party that can and eventually displace Congress, which made it to wake up from its slumber and we saw economy revolution, infrastructure growth and moving away from the slogan roti, kapda aur makan to Bijli, Paani aur Sadak, I wonder where India would have been if we hadn't had a major party like BJP which can challenge Congress and take away the vote anytime; for the better of India I wish we continue to vote so that we not only have one party as the clear leader, we also have a second party which can become the leader anytime.

Nandan Nilekani delivered this talk on TED - Ideas for India's Future, a worth watching one which clearly defines the growth path for India and also mentions why India cannot be and should not be ignored.

Number portability - Consumer is the King, Airtel would be biggest loser

Just waiting for the number portability to come into effect and I would be the first one to move to BSNL from Airtel. Till around 2 years back Airtel service was better and for them customer was king, but now they care a damn!.

I have a 249 plan (I live in Hyderabd) wherein I get 600 units free and some 200 sms free and when I am at office, I usually dont make calls, so I usually make calls when at home, but in my house only Airtel network doesnt work, I have tried Vodafone and BSNL both work like charm, I registered complaint with Airtel in Jan this year and even after 5 months nothing seems to have happened, neither they call and let me know what is the status and when it would be fixed, but the moment I stopped paying my bill, I got 2 calls everyday religiously asking for the non payment, and a week back my connection was temporarily take out of service, I wish I could also take Airtel out of service for not working on my complaint for last 5 months. Today I checked the online portal and see that they have deleted the complaint I had registered 5 months back... I am really flabbergasted how a company like Airtel would do this....

Airtel you suck and BSNL is much better anyday, number portability am waiting for you.

IPL Saga continues

As IPL reaches its fag end of its season 2, more than the cricket it is the other things that have taken the centre stage, first and foremost whether one agrees or not, defnitely it is this blog - http://fakeiplplayer.blogspot.com/, which has made all the noise that is required for the marketing, there are many people who are watching just to see what the fakeplayer is mentioning in the blog, well to me it has certainly been a very entertaining affair.

I sincerely feel even now that the IPL could have been held in India by working out with the goverment, IPL boss thinks he and IPL and bigger and better than India and its democracy, well he is wrong and it would be proven. To ensure that spectators are present in the stadium there are so many stupid things IPL is doing, like choosing bollywood queen, sms game to predict the score in the over, giving money to schools (well I have nothing against it, my only grudge is what was done to schools here during last year season, nothing!!!!, this is purely a master marketing stroke by IPL to have more SA people come to ground for emotional reason)

I had written an year back during the last year about how IPL will change cricket and I see it happening, other thing that has struck me is the sheer lack of control on IPL by ICC, IPL is governed by its own law and whatever they may argue I believe that this is nothing but minting money and not cricket talent development. The owners have the right over the team, they can force anyone to play or drop and thus shackling a upcoming players confidence and BCCI cannot do anything, with less than 2 months for the t20 world cup, there is no effort done to keep our prime players fresh and they would be worn out (take Ishant Sharma for ex, he is playing for a lost cause, BCCI could do itself good to ensure that he gets the right break). 

I wish ICC has more control on IPL and rather leave it to just BCCI, else cricket wont be cricket.

Tribute to bruno (my german shepherd)

Bruno (my german shepard dog), my ferocious yet gentle friend is no more. He valiantly fought the tumour in his stomach for last six months but finally he gave up yesterday.

I brought him when he was a month old and he has been the baby of the house, he was everything to my dad, one of the reason my decision to move to hyderabad without fear was that he was there taking care of my home and parents.

I remember the days when he used to wait for the gate to be opened so that he can go out and roam freely in the road and still recollect the many complaints we used to get from the people who got scare, but till date he has never bitten anyone.

The days when I used to give him bath, somehow he used to figure out and used to run and hide in the terrace and I had to literally pull him down and give him bath, he was so heavy, it used to take dad and myself atleast 30 mins to give him a proper bath, then he used to love when I used to groom his hair and rub his body, he was always ready to play

My son when he was born used to play a lot with him, he used to hit it, pull the tail and put hands in its mouth, Bruno always knew how to handle kids, he was like a son to my parents and brother to me.

I truly miss him and pray that he has the best in the place where he is travelling now.

He was 9 years old.

The iGoogle page has been increasingly becoming poplular by offfering all the google services on one page, the gmail app on iGoogle is better in terms one can not only check the mails, they can move/delete/compose etc being only on the iGoogle page, the one thing that was missing was the ability to chat and now Google has added that to iGoogle.

Wonder Boy - he can speak many foriegn language (He is not educated though)

I got this videos forwarded from a friend, this world has still things to amaze me :).
This boy wonder, Ravi is a seller of hand fan made of peacock feather and lives in slum.
While selling he has picked up so many languages from the tourists that he can converse in thier own language (german, japanese, arabic, italian, french and many more).
In the first video which was shot many years ago shows the young Ravi selling, the second video was shot when he is in his teens and he is still on the street selling the peacock fans.

This kind of somehow explains how the kids in SD Millionaire could talk to the tourists in english even though they are illiterate, Money and hunger ensures that we learn anything and do to survive in this nasty little world.
Even though I can speak Kannada/Telugu/Tamil/Hindi/English/Malayalam (little), this one is way  beyond.

Google Power Project

This is one of Google's project which has silently started and I think will definitely be a revolution. Its really Google's benchmark to do things which are different and will help the majority of the population in a great way, like Google earth, Google document etc.

With this power project thier idea is to have every household to install smart meters which track the electricity usage and provide detailed usage information through the day, for makign this happen they are developing a webapp to check the usage online, this way it will help the common man decide which are gluttons and how they should use it.

Pak Media take on mubai terror attack

This guy on the show, Zaid Hamid, who is supposed to be a defence analyst and I pity pakistan to be having such people.
He goes on to say that the whole terror attack is a staged one which went awry and now India is blaming Pakistan for that.
The lady hosting the show (she looks like a complete comedian) asks pretty silly question and this guy answers with all vigor and validates his reasoning.
The other lady on the show is a parliamentarian, who is more interested in showing her vocabulary skills.

I came to be aware of many issues that is prevailing in India that they Pakistan is concerned about and I really appreciate it.

Please watch the entire episode, part 1 to 5. I found this to be better than the comedy shows that happen on Indian television channels.

I have laughed so much that my stomach aches now, thanks to these 3 that I am able to forget for a moment all the sad things happened in the last week.

All I can say to these is to 'Growing old is Mandatory, Growing Up is optional' so GROW UP.
